Accent modification, sometimes called accent reduction, is an individualized program usually intended to help a foreign speaker sound more like a native speaker of a language. Sometimes others use this service to reduce a regional accent. Speakers with a “Boston accent” or “southern twang” can learn to speak with a more general American accent if that is their goal. Actors who need to speak in a particular accent or dialect for a theatrical or movie role may work with a speech-language therapist to develop that manner of speech. Several program options of accent modification are available.
There are a number of speech and language issues that can affect school-aged children. They may struggle with speech sound production, word finding, sentence formulation, reading comprehension, social skills, executive functioning or organization. Speech-language therapy services are available to target areas.
